For some patients with near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia, an alternative to LASIK is Clear Lens Exchange. It may be a better option for patients over the age of 40 who have high amounts of correction, thin corneas, or early cataracts.
Clear Lens Exchange is a surgical procedure which is the equivalent of modern cataract surgery, using a technique which has been perfected over the past 40 years.
In cataract surgery, a patient’s cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an intra-ocular lens (IOL) to improve their vision. This same technique is used in Clear Lens Exchange, but the purpose is to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism.
Patients who have Clear Lens Exchange have the advantage of never developing cataracts in the future. Also, Clear Lens Exchange can be performed with bifocal lens implants, and can thereby reduce the need for glasses for both distance and near vision.
